Overview

Overview

Released in small quantities and only in exceptional years, St Peters is Seppelt’s flagship Shiraz and a testimony to the distinctive style and pedigree of Grampians Shiraz. The lineage of this iconic wine dates back to 1964, when ‘Great Western Hermitage’, as it was then known, was first made. Since 1998, this wine has been called St Peters in honour of the first vineyard planted in the region.

St Peters is sourced from the finest and most intense fruit from the best blocks of our Great Western Vineyard. In Vintage 2023 this included select parcels from the Bass and Arrawatta Blocks. It is a seductive expression of Shiraz from the Grampians region with extended cellaring potential.

95 Points Jeni Port - Halliday Wine Companion 2025

Jeni Port

"Take a big lung-full of that bouquet and its ripe black and blue berries, heady spice and regional earthy mintiness. Comes across lighter in frame than usual and, with it, a real elegance of fruit expression captures some peppery spice amid the dark fruits and subtle layers of woody oak supported in graphite tannins. Takes a challenging vintage and turns it on its head wonderfully. Top winemaking. 95 Points."

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

A fragrant lift of spicy blueberry fruit, violets and bay-leaf with further nuances of subtle oak and cordite.

Flavours and Palate

Reflecting the vintage conditions, the 2023 St Peters is tightly contained with a delicate litheness and finesse woven over a medium-bodied frame. Satsuma plum and blueberry notes flesh out the palate while hints of dark chocolate, flint, spice and pink peppercorns complement nuanced charry oak. Regional graphite tannins focus the palate and provide a framework and length that will see this wine unfold in the years to come.

Grampians, Victoria

Viticulture dates back to the 1850s Victorian gold rush in the cool and dry Grampians. The golden nugget of this stunning terroir is delicate yet intensely flavoured Shiraz with compelling fragrance and spice.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Like much of the rest of Victoria, the Grampians experienced a tricky 2023 season with much higher rainfall and lower temperatures than the regional long-term average. These conditions delayed the typical harvest window with disease pressure mounting towards the end of the season. Responding to these conditions, fruit was picked in a slightly earlier than normal window. The resulting wines are regionally unique with distinct spicy notes, dark fruit and characteristic Grampians graphite tannins.
